A striking terracotta horse head from ancient Cyprus, dating to the 7th century BCE. The sculpture is modeled with simplified, stylized features characteristic of Archaic Greek votive art. The ears are alert and the muzzle slightly flared, conveying a sense of life and strength. The surface retains traces of its original pigment, suggesting it may once have been more vividly painted. Likely part of a larger votive figure or equestrian group, this fragment would have served as a dedication in a sanctuary context, possibly honoring a deity associated with horses or travel.

Medium:  Terracotta

Dimensions:  Height: 6 3/4 inches (17 cm), Length: 5 inches (12.7 cm)

Condition:  Fragmentary from a larger sculpture, the head in overall intact and in good condition, with heavy mineral encrustation.

Provenance:  Thilo and lzora Steinschulte private collection, VA, acquired in 1970 from Susette Khayat Ancient Arts Gallery, New York, #5777, then by descent. Accompanied by a copy of the original collector's paperwork.
