A finely carved carnelian pendant representing a stylized grub worm (“gusano”), a form distinctive to the Tairona culture of northern Colombia. The figure features incised facial details and rounded eyes, rendered with soft modeling and rhythmic segmentation along the body. Drilled longitudinally for suspension, this example displays beautifully banded orange and cream hues that catch the light with warmth and translucency. Such pendants were symbols of regeneration and transformation, reflecting the Tairona belief in cyclical renewal within nature.

Medium:  Carnelian, gold

Dimensions:  Pendant width: 7/8 inch (2.2 cm).  It has been strung on a modern 18" adjustable chain of 18K yellow gold.

Condition:  The pendant is intact and in very good condition overall.  

Provenance:  Private Florida collection, acquired early 1970s.
