A Gandharian Gray Schist Figure of a Kneeling Atlas, ca. 2nd - 4th century CE

This finely carved gray schist figure of a kneeling Atlas showcases the muscular tension and expressive modeling typical of later Gandharan sculpture. Shown with one knee raised and the other folded beneath him, he braces his weight in a dynamic pose that conveys the effort of supporting a cosmic burden. The muscular torso, deeply drilled beard, and curled hair are rendered with crisp detail, while the draped garment falls in elegant layered folds across the lap.

A single wing extends from the figure's left shoulder, connecting it to the tradition of winged attendants and architectural supporters found throughout Buddhist sites in the region. The dense schist allows for precise carving and a striking appearance, making this piece an excellent example of the syncretic Gandharan aesthetic. This style combines Hellenistic influences with local iconography, resulting in a dynamic and expressive supporting figure.

Dimensions: Height: 6 7/8 inches (17.5 cm), Width: 5 inches (12.7 cm)

Condition: The piece shows minor signs of age-related wear and slight losses. The left wing is intact, although its tip has been reattached; the right wing has been lost since antiquity. There are small chips on the base, including one corner that has been reattached. The stone exhibits stable fissures, which are typical of Gandharan schist. Presents beautifully on a custom mount suitable for museum display.
