A well-carved lapis lazuli cylinder bead, distinguished by its saturated royal blue color and central band of applied sheet gold. The workmanship is precise and elegant, with a subtle taper and smooth finish, suggesting it may have once served as a high-status personal ornament or amulet. The addition of gold not only enhances its aesthetic appeal but also reflects the historical value placed on the combination of these two prized materials.
Lapis lazuli, imported into Egypt and the Near East from mines in Afghanistan, was revered for its deep color and rarity. It was commonly associated with royalty, protection, and the divine. The applied gold band would have symbolized prestige and possibly held ritual significance.
This rare and attractive bead is now strung on a contemporary 18K yellow gold chain, allowing it to be worn as a modern pendant while preserving its ancient integrity.
