This is a well-preserved embroidered panel from the Chancay textile tradition, made with wool yarns in warm shades of ochre, brown, red, and cream. The design features a diamond lattice motif, each row alternating between a light and dark colro scheme. Inside each diamond is a stylized anthropomorphic figure, depicted upright, with outstretched arms and bandied legs, the negative space filled with either a red or dark brown outline against the panel’s brown background. Surrounding the diamond figures are diagonally stepped borders that create a rhythmic visual flow, giving the overall pattern a sense of continuous expansion across the surface.
This is a wonderful example of Chancay textiles and showcases the high level of technical skill and aesthetic refinement achieved during the late Intermediate Period of coastal weaving. Textiles of this size and complexity were likely used as garments or ceremonial hangings, valued for both their iconography and the labor involved in their creation. The interlocking motifs and repeated figures suggest themes related to fertility, ancestry, and cyclical renewal, which are also reflected in Chancay funerary textiles.

Condition: Professionally cleaned, stabilized, and mounted on a wooden stretcher, housed in a museum-quality plexiglass display frame. The colors are strong and the surface is well preserved, overall remaining in excellent condition for its age.
Provenance: From the distinguished collection of Justin Kerr and Dicey Taylor, New York City. Kerr, celebrated for pioneering rollout photography and for creating the comprehensive Maya Vase Database, assembled many of the finest examples of Classic Maya painted ceramics during the 1970s and early 1980s. Taylor, an art historian and curator, worked closely with Kerr in cataloguing and researching the collection, and the couple became well known for their scholarship and connoisseurship in Maya art.
