This pair of almond-shaped eye inlays was crafted for insertion into a sculptural work, such as a statue, coffin, or mummy mask. The inlays are composed of several carefully fitted elements arranged in a layered construction. The outer casing is carved from lapis lazuli, forming the elongated cosmetic outline of the eye. Within this lapis frame, the white quartz sclera is set into a shaped bronze case that fits securely into the lapis surround. The pupil is formed from a circular disc of polished black basalt, mounted within a bronze backing and attached to the quartz sclera.

The layered construction reflects the sophisticated techniques employed by Egyptian craftsmen, who frequently combined contrasting stones and metal fittings to create vivid, lifelike eyes. Once inserted into carved recesses in statues or funerary masks, such inlays would have animated the figure's face and heightened its realism.

Lapis lazuli held deep symbolic meaning in ancient Egypt, representing the night sky, heaven, and divine power. Inlaid eyes carried both visual and spiritual significance. They were believed to allow the represented figure to “see,” enabling the spiritual presence associated with the object to remain aware of offerings and ritual activity. At the same time, the striking realism of these eyes helped figures hold the gaze of the living, reinforcing the connection between the physical image and the divine or eternal realm.
