Two Greek Gold Leaves from an Olive Wreath, Hellenistic Period, ca. 3rd - 1st century BCE
This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $75 if shipping internationally.
Two finely worked gold leaves from a Hellenistic olive wreath, each fashioned from a sheet of high-karat gold hammered to exceptional thinness and cut into the naturalistic form of an olive leaf. The central vein and subtle contours are rendered in repoussé, while the delicate edges preserve the organic character of the original foliage. A small perforation at the base of each leaf secured them to the wreath's supporting framework of gold wire branches.
Gold wreaths rank among the finest achievements of Hellenistic goldsmithing, faithfully reproducing living plants associated with Greek mythology, religion, and civic life. Olive wreaths held particular significance as symbols of Athena, whose sacred olive tree on the Athenian Acropolis represented wisdom, peace, and prosperity. They were awarded as prizes in athletic and military victories, worn during religious festivals, banquets, and ceremonial occasions, and frequently placed in burials as emblems of honor, virtue, and the hope of immortality. Their extraordinary delicacy indicates they were intended for ceremonial display rather than everyday wear.
