A Roman Yellow Glass Plate, Roman Imperial Period, ca. 1st century CE
Sorry, this object has sold
A particularly refined example of Roman tableware, this elegant plate is formed from transparent glass with a soft yellow-green hue that catches the light with quiet warmth. The form is both restrained and sophisticated, defined by a wide, shallow body that opens outward in a controlled, architectural sweep before resolving in a neatly folded tubular rim.
At the center, a slightly raised omphalos anchors the composition, a feature rooted in classical design vocabulary and often associated with both practical and symbolic functions. The plate rests on a low, neatly formed tubular foot, giving it a poised elevation and reinforcing the clarity of its silhouette. The piece is free-blown, with an evenness and balance that speaks to a confident hand. Subtle variations in thickness and tone, along with the finely polished surface, demonstrate the level of control achieved by Roman glassworkers at their height. The result is an object that feels both utilitarian and quietly luxurious, intended for use yet elevated by its craftsmanship.
