A fabulous matched pair of elaborate gold earrings originating from the Eastern Roman Empire, the central pendant is a hollow-formed amphora with granulate decoration. Both sides of the body are set with turquoise and lapis lazuli bordered with granulation.

On either side of the amphora handles hang a pair of flat discs, while the handles themselves are portrayed in the shape of frolicking dolphins. The dolphin's noses are joined to a hollow formed hoop, the latter attached above to a solid circlet, inlaid with a bezel set turquoise and expertly converted with a later ear post and hinge for wearing.  Just superb!

Condition:    Intact and in excellent condition overall, with fine reddish-gold patina, modified in recent times with a hinged bar for wear.

Provenance:  Shlomo Moussaieff (1923 - 2015) private collection, Israel. Exported with a permit from the Israeli Antiquities Authority.
