Avant la Troisième Période Intermédiaire, les amulettes appui-tête ne se trouvent que dans les sépultures royales ; Toutankhamon en possédait un en fer, tout comme le prince Hornakht et le roi Sheshonq II à Tanis. Cependant, à partir de la période saïte, ils sont constitués presque exclusivement d'hématite ou d'un autre substitut de couleur foncée comme le basalte (comme ce grand exemplaire), la serpentine, l'obsidienne ou la diorite.
Il s’agissait essentiellement de relever magiquement la tête du défunt en résurrection, tout comme le dieu soleil s’élevait chaque matin au-dessus de l’horizon oriental. Cependant, le chapitre 166 révèle en outre que cela empêcherait également que la tête du défunt soit coupée, un sort très redouté contre lequel le chapitre 43 était spécifiquement dirigé.
