Expertly fashioned from a single piece of black obsidian, this impressive Aztec spear blade displays the remarkable stone-working skill for which Mesoamerican craftsmen are renowned. The blade is bifacially worked with finely pressure-flaked edges, creating a symmetrical triangular form terminating in a sharp point. Distinctive barbs project from either side of the lower blade, while the stemmed base was designed for hafting to a wooden shaft, creating a formidable hunting or warfare weapon.
Obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass, was prized throughout ancient Mexico for its exceptional sharpness. Even after centuries, examples like this retain edges capable of making cuts far finer than those of many modern steel blades. Weapons armed with obsidian points played a central role in Aztec military culture and were also imbued with symbolic significance, as the material was associated with power, sacrifice, and the gods.
The present example is particularly attractive for its glossy black surface, translucent olive-brown edges, and finely executed knapping. The blade remains an excellent representation of Late Postclassic Aztec lithic technology and stands as a testament to the sophistication of pre-Columbian stone tool production.

Provenance: From the distinguished collection of Justin Kerr and Dicey Taylor, New York City. Kerr, celebrated for pioneering rollout photography and for creating the comprehensive Maya Vase Database, assembled many of the finest examples of Classic Maya painted ceramics during the 1970s and early 1980s. Taylor, an art historian and curator, worked closely with Kerr in cataloging and researching the collection, and the couple became well known for their scholarship and connoisseurship in Maya art.
