A very good example of 19th-century jewelry in the classical tradition of hardstone cameo carving. Cameos were highly prized in antiquity (Greek and Roman) and saw a real revival in the 19th century, when the classical tradition and historical subjects were a major source of inspiration for European jewelers. This elegant, handmade oval brooch features a substantial, layered agate cameo depicting a bearded male figure in profile, facing left, with one hand raised in a gesture of blessing. Identified as St. Peter, the figure is traditionally associated with the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, although a key is not clearly discernible in the photograph.
The cameo is carved in contrasting white and dark layers, producing a striking sculptural effect that accentuates the figure's facial features, curled hair, beard, and draped garment. The cameo is set in an oval gold setting with a raised, tiered border and six small rose-cut diamonds spaced evenly around the central stone. The reverse retains its horizontal pin fastening. Combining the ancient art of cameo engraving with 19th-century goldsmithing, this brooch reflects the continuing influence of classical artistic traditions on later European decorative arts. Its religious subject and refined craftsmanship render it particularly appropriate for the Timeless Inspirations collection, where the artistry and symbolism of antiquity find renewed expression in later works.
