A large Burnished Double Handled Bowl, Iron Age I-II, ca. 1400 - 800 BCE

Regular price $3,500 USDOf red burnished earthenware, the tapering globular body sits on a flat base, narrowing to a flat rim with a wide mouth, two curved zoomorphic handles applied on either side, with a band of incised crosshatched decoration that sits below the rim. A very good example of type.
Iranian ceramic vessels were used to store, transport, and serve food and drink. Most of the bowl, cups, jars, and other common shapes that persist for millennia, could have fulfilled these basic purposes. Pots typically abound in domestic contexts. Occasionally certain shapes or features suggest more specialized roles in preparing or serving food. Many pots have also been recovered from burials, where they were commonly deposited with the deceased presumably to serve as food containers in the afterlife, and clay vessels were used in both elite and common burials.

Provenance: The Hauge Collection of Ancient & Iranian Art, assembled between 1962 and 1966. Foreign service brothers, Victor and Osborne Hauge, together with their wives Takako and Gratia, assembled their collection of Persian, Japanese, Chinese, and Southeast Asian works of fine and folk art while stationed overseas with the US government after WWII. In consultation with academics and dealers, the Hauges assembled over two decades of what former Freer Gallery of Art director Harold Stern described in 1957 as "without doubt one of the finest private collections in the world". Victor and Takako published Folk Traditions in Japanese Art to coincide with a traveling exhibition held from 1978 at the Cleveland Museum of Art; Japan House Gallery, New York; and Asian Art Museum, San Francisco. Much of their collection was donated to the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery at the Smithsonian Institute culminating in an exhibition and published catalogue in 2000. The balance of the collection, including this object, was inherited by descent in 2016.

Regular price $3,000 USDConsisting of a circlet of gold wire, that tapers from an animal's head at the front end to a hooked point which passes through a loop below the animal's throat, the head intricately detailed and the loop textured with twisted wire.
Dimensions: Length: 2 cm (0.78 inches)
Condition: Delicate condition, eye inlays now missing, overall in very good condition.
Provenance: Vernon Pick (1903 - 1986) private collection assembled in Switzerland in the late 1950's and then by descent to Pick's nephew, Mr. Jim Hanson, Minnesota. Vernon Pick, a middle-aged electrician from Minnesota, turned uranium prospecting into a multimillion dollar proposition. After nine months of fruitless prospecting, Pick discovered uranium 75 miles southwest of Green River, in Emery County in Utah on June 21, 1952. He staked several claims and called them the Delta mines. In Utah, he proved up 300,000 tons of ore that Time magazine called “one of the richest finds in the Colorado Plateau.”. Two years later Pick sold his mine to international financier Floyd Odlum for $9 million and a custom-converted PBY airplane. Odlum renamed the mine the Hidden Splendor, but soon after his purchase the highly touted vein pinched out. Local wags then dubbed the mine "Odlum's Hidden Blunder."

Daughter of the sun god Ra, her name literally means, “the powerful.” She was a sun goddess, embodying the scorching, burning, destructive heat of the sun. Fierce goddess of war, the destroyer of the enemies of Ra and Osiris, she was represented as having the head of a lioness and the body of a female human. She quickly became a favorite of the pharaohs, symbolizing their strength and heroism in battle.

A Roman Bronze Patera Handle, ca. 1st - 2nd century CE

Regular price $2,950 USDA terrific patera handle terminating in a wolf's head with an elongated muzzle and open mouth, almond-shaped eyes and incised lines above the raised brow bone, the flattened ears and around the collar, all indicating fur. The shaft is decorated with two rows of a semi-circular pattern with faint fluted lines still visible. The base of the handle is flared to attach to the bowl of the patera, with a geometric shape at the base for added decoration.
Background: The wolf was one of the most important symbols in Roman culture, stemming from the Roman foundation myth of Romulus and Remus. A she-wolf rescued and nursed the infant twins Romulus and Remus after they were abandoned in the wild by order of King Amulius of Alba Longa. The twins survived because of the she-wolf and grew up to become the founders of Rome. Thus the wolf become one of the most important and well-recognized symbols of Rome, featured on everything from flags, to coins, to patera handles.
The famous Capitoline Wolf (Lupa Capitolina) is the sculpture of the she-wolf suckling the infants cast in the 12th century AD has become the long-standing symbol of Rome, and is even used today as a symbol of Latin ancestry. Although the statue we know today was created in the Medieval Period, a similar image was known to the ancient Romans; Livy mentions such a statue set at the foot of the Palatine Hill in 295 BC, Cicero mentions a statue as a "sacred object" on the Capitoline Hill in 65 BC, and Pliny the Elder cites one in the Roman Forum during the first century AD.

In this tropical region, numerous species abound, from tiny terrestrial varieties to giant tree frogs, some with poisonous skins and some vibrantly colored. A tree frog may be depicted here, with its beaded eyes, wide smile, long thin legs, and wide round feet projecting from its body. Emerging from the mouth is a scrolled tongue, a pervasive serpent symbol, that is flanked by outstretched arms on either side. A large pair of spiral ear spools add a decorative touch to either side of the mouth. The pendant has been paired with handmade faceted emeralds graduating from 3.5-4mm and twelve 14K gold spacer beads complete this stunning ensemble.

Decorated with circles engraved on the wide flat chest, as well as two diagonal lines running up the chest to a linear zigzag around the neck.

Dimensions: Length 1.5 inches (3.8 centimeters)
Condition: More fragile at the bottom and back of the piece, gold sheet starting to curl out on the bottom, small loss on one side, the same side has a small mineral deposit. First fashioned in clay, then overlaid with gold, remains of clay still visible inside.

A Luristan Bronze Cheek Piece, ca mid 8th century BCE

Regular price $1,950 USDHorse-bits are a large and recognizable group within the canonical bronzes of Luristan. A typical Luristan horse-bit consists of a rigid mouthpiece and a pair of cheekpieces, either plain or cast in the form of horses, caprids (goats), boars, cocks, and griffins. It is unclear whether horse-bits were manufactured for practical use or only for funerary purposes; however, because many examples seem to show wear and almost all have rear spikes that could have been used as goads, it seems probable that they were used in daily life for large horses, which is also indicative a mobile community.
Condition: The object is intact and in very good condition overall with areas of deep green and brown surface patina, with a connection loop on the reverse.

Regular price $1,950 USDConical in form on a flat base, the sides boldly carved in raised relief with three bulls in a procession to the right, one bull complete, its head turned out, with large oval eyes, short downturned horns, an undulating border above the base.
Background: Stone vessels of this type - highly prized luxury goods made of imported stone and carved with great skill - dating to the late Uruk period were often found in temples or palaces. Bull cups are thought to have been made for ceremonial use in temples (the sacred herd motif of processing bulls is known from cups and cylinder seals of this period) and may be associated with fertility cults.

Condition: Surface pitting and wear, heavy loss to rim and sides of vessel, one bull complete, the other two partially portrayed.

Vincent and Olga Diniacopoulos arrived in Montreal from Alexandria in 1951, bringing with them the largest private collection of antiquities known in Canada. A Roman bronze figurine of a bull, ca. 1st century CE

Regular price $1,950 USDDescription: striding bull on a rectangular flanged pedestal. Right front leg is advanced with head turned slightly to the left, incised hatch marks appear on the partial remnants of horns atop his head and above the ears. Deep eye sockets and an expressive mouth line make for detailed facial features. Two protrusions on the backside remain where a looped tail once was. Downward oriented grooves show a textured neck and pronounced chest.
Bull figurines are perhaps one of the most popular type of animal figurine within the Roman world. Apart from the common threat of bull imagery in the ancient realm, with its fertility symbolism, bull figurines may have been considered appropriate because the animal itself was the quintessential animal of sacrifice. Another possibility is that the bulls were considered appropriate for specific cults, for instance those of Dionysus or Jupiter.
