Regular price $1,950 USDJade was especially appreciated by Mesoamerican and Lower Central American people because of its green color. This stone was associated with water, and vegetation, especially young, maturing corn. For this reason, it was also related to life and death. Olmec, Maya, Aztec, and Costa Rican elites particularly appreciated jade carvings and artifacts and commissioned elegant pieces from skillful artisans. Jade was traded and exchanged among elite members as a luxury item all over the pre-Hispanic American world and is often found in elite burial contexts, as personal adornments. It was replaced by gold very late in time in Mesoamerica, and around 500 AD in Costa Rica and Lower Central America.
Condition: Incomplete, with loss to the top right and chin area, that surprisingly does not detract, otherwise intact and well carved. A truly attractive and appealing necklace.

A good Narino Terracotta Ocarina, ca. 500 - 1000 CE

Regular price $650 USDan early flute of stylized shell form, the body, with highly burnished cream-slip finish is decorated with two facing jaguars in red/brown polychrome.
Once dismissed as mere toys or playthings, modern x-ray technology revealed hidden chambers that allowed for the creation of up to 17 different notes in some cases as well as musically advanced scales. Far from being toys, the ocarinas of antiquity are marvels of design and musical knowledge. It is now believed ocarinas were played in sacred ceremonies to induce healing, trance, and invoke different deities and are still used today by many of the surviving indigenous cultures.
Condition: Some minor loss of polychrome that does not detract but is otherwise intact and in very good condition overall. A lovely example.

An impressive Andesite Human Trophy Head, Costa Rica, ca. 1000 - 1500 CE

Regular price $3,250 USDDisembodied human heads are ubiquitous in the Pre-Columbian iconography of Costa Rica and neighboring areas of Panama. Accounts make it clear that indigenous peoples practiced taking and displaying human heads as trophies. In this volcanic stone example, the closed eyes and slack mouth suggest death, while the close-fitting cap of geometric design may be of fiber as the form suggests twisted cords or a rattan-like material. It was thought that taking trophy heads was the direct result of warfare undertaken by warriors over conflicts about territory, material resources and/or leadership.
However, there was another significant dimension to warfare—the magical and the supernatural, whereby decapitation may have been viewed as a necessary evil for combating the adverse effects of sorcery (Hoopes 2007). Usekars (wizards) were powerful religious practitioners who defended their communities against sorcery and were themselves capable of casting harmful spells. As late as the nineteenth century, the Bribri usekars of eastern Costa Rica organized revenge-motivated raiding parties to kill and decapitate other sorcerers. However decapitation occurred, the prevalence of severed heads in ancient Costa Rican art indeed indicates particular beliefs regarding the potency of the head, diminishing the vitality of the individual's larger family, and increasing that of the head-taker.

A Narino Pod-Shaped Hardstone Whistle, ca. 500 - 1000 CE

Regular price $1,500 USDCarefully hand-carved from warm tan hardstone in the typical Narino style, the upper half depicts a human head with distinctly carved eyes, nose, and mouth, with two monkeys clinging to the head and back. The lower half, shaped into a pod that tapers to a point, has several circles incised into the stone. Three small holes and one large hole that serves as a mouthpiece are carved into the lower portion to create a whistle.

A Costa Rican Tripod Bowl, ca. 1000 - 1350 CE

Regular price $950 USDAn excellent example of the Costa Rican tripod form, with a wide shallow bowl supported by three legs molded into points. The legs contain round ceramic pellets that function as rattles; they were probably wrapped in leaves before firing, during which the leaves burned away, freeing the rattles to emphasize the ceremonial gesture of drinking. The vessel is elegantly decorated with a band of red around the interior and exterior rim, and a stylistic fret and scroll motif that extends from the body onto the shoulders of the legs, ending above a red wash that emphasizes the legs tapering to points.

A Moche Solid Cast Copper Warrior Figure, ca. 500 - 800 CE

Regular price $6,500 USDSolid copper cast warrior figures, such as this example, were burial offerings for royalty of the Moché culture. In this example, the warrior wears a padded tunic, helmet, multi-strand necklace, and ear spool ornaments, and carries a backpack with gourd water bottles. In his right hand he holds up a round war shield and in his left dangles a free moving suspended trophy head, taken in battle.
Warfare was a recurring theme, especially in Phases IV and V, the Middle and Late Phases of Moche civilization. Moche artists frequently depicted warriors and warrior activities, and hundreds of these depictions can be found in museums and private collections today. The combat they depict appears to be ceremonial rather than militaristic. The essence of Moche combat appears to have been the expression of individual valor, in which the warriors engage in one-on-one combat. The elaborate clothing and ornaments worn by Moche warriors indicate that they were people of high status—almost certainly members of the aristocracy.

A suspension loop attached to the back of the head is threaded to a superb necklace of the finest handmade graduated faceted rondelle rubies ranging from 3-4mm that are accented with ancient hand rolled gold tube beads.

Regular price $2,950 USDCarved in low relief from veined turquoise, the pendant depicting the portrait head of a lord-king wearing a large elaborate headdress above a scowling face with glaring eyes, a wide, nose, pursed lips, and full cheeks, wearing a pair of ear spools, the back uncarved, a hole drilled bilaterally through the headdress for suspension.
Greenstone pendants of all types were worn vertically in some fashion, whether as a pectoral or in a diadem. This example was most likely worn as a necklace due to the horizontal drill hole that would have allowed it to be strung and hung around the neck as well as the uncarved back of the pendant.

A Sican/Chimu Idol of a Seated Lord, ca. 9th –11th century CE

Regular price $3,500 USDThe Lambayeque Valley was home to the Sicán (or Lambayeque) ceramic style. Developing toward the end of the first millennium CE, it continued until the end of the fourteenth century when the region was conquered by the expanding Chimú kingdom.
The most characteristic motif in Sicán art is the frontal face of the so-called Sicán Lord. It is widely seen on ceramics, metalwork, textiles, and mural painting. With this rare portrayal, an impressive Lord is solid cast in lead metal and seated on his throne. He has the characteristic large wide eyes, prominent pointed nose, and wide mouth. His ears are triangular projections with large circular ear ornaments below. He wears an elaborate plumed royal headdress, and at the front, extends a kero with both hands.

A fine Mayan Stone Vulture Hacha, ca. 500 - 800 CE

Regular price $12,000 USDMesoamerican ballplayers wore protective gear called hachas, palmas, and yokes to protect their hips and abdomens from the impact of the game’s solid rubber ball. In painting and sculpture, the yoke is shown worn around the player’s hips, the palma or hacha attached at the front. Those used during active play were most likely made of wood or some other light material; stone versions such as this one were worn, if at all, during ballgame-related rituals, or placed on display. Given the distinctive design of each hacha, both those worn and those carved in stone may have served to identify teams or individuals.
The name hacha refers to the axe-like form of many examples(hacha is Spanish for axe), including the one seen here. The form of these pieces is unique, with the back slightly wider than the front where the sides converge to a sharp point. Facial features and other details are carved in low relief, each side a mirror image of the other. Here, the artist depicted a detailed rendering of the subject. Each head feather is carefully rendered individually, with increased depth of relief from front to back, mimicking how vulture feathers overlap in nature. The rounded form of the cheeks, the long curved open beak with the drilled nostril, and large recessed eye suggest the alertness of the bird as it spies and focusses on its prey.

A rare Mixtec Serpent Head Jade Bead, ca. 13th - 15th century CE

Regular price $7,500 USDExquisitely carved from a single piece of jade into the cylindrical form of a serpent head, the long forked tongue, curved fangs, raised snout, hinged jaw, and wide staring eyes rendered in relief, all incised around the open "mouth" or suspension hole drilled through the length of the bead.
Similar effigy beads representing standing or squatting men were believed to have been worn or strung in the hair of mummy bundles as protective devices, and also may have doubled as important trade items (Stone-Miller 48).
Jade was one of the most highly prized materials throughout ancient Pre-Columbia. Jade beads first appeared in Olmec tombs around 1000 BCE in a distinctive blue-green tone. Apple-green jade began appearing in Mayan and Teotihuacan offerings in the first millennium CE, probably sourced from the Guatemalan highlands. Jade seemed to have diminished in the Post-Classic Period (ca. 900 - 1500 CE) and as a result, Mixtec and Aztec offerings were often of less brilliantly colored stone or were reworked from earlier Olmec and Mayan pieces (Dubin 246).
