The spherical=shaped head pierced longitudinally for attachment to a wooden shaft, carved from a pink and cream breccia. Because of the fragile nature of the stone, breccia mace heads were thought to be ceremonial and not for use in warfare.

The rarity of the stone would also indicate that it belonged to a person of the royal bloodline. A mace is a basic hand-held weapon, half-way between a club and a hammer. Symbols of military might, Egyptian iconography is rife with depictions of Egyptian leaders smiting enemies with a mace, and some of the earliest tangible documentation of Dynastic Egypt was provided by ceremonial mace-heads, such as that of the King Scorpion and King Narmer of Dynasty 1.
