Preserving the name of the deceased was essential to rebirth in the afterlife. Wooden mummy labels, such as this wood example, were inscribed by family members with the name of the deceased, the names of the person’s parents, and sometimes a short religious message and sent with the body to the embalmer. Seldom seen on the market, this rare example is shaped like a stele with a rounded top and a central hole for attachment and is inscribed in black ink with seven lines of fine demotic script.
