A well-preserved example of a functional measuring vessel used in the agrarian economy of ancient Egypt. Formed in coarse marl clay with a characteristic red-brown surface, the vessel displays a piriform body that tapers cleanly to a pointed base, designed either for insertion into soft ground or for use with a supporting stand, as seen here. The straight-edged circular mouth suggests practical use rather than ceremonial intent.
These vessels were employed for measuring and dispensing grain, a central commodity in the Nile-based economy. Standardized measures played a critical role in taxation, storage, and redistribution systems administered by the state and temple complexes. The robust fabric and relatively thick walls reflect durability required for repeated daily handling.
