Deep, tapering bowl, slightly concave rim, disk foot, two tilted horizontal handles. Skyphoi of Beazley’s CHC Group (ABV 617-625) are related in shape to cups of the Heron Class, but are “rough” and have figures confined to a narrow reserved band. In this case, both sides feature a male in a striped mantle seated to the right between two sphinxes, who face the palmettes at the handles. The drawing is cursory, enlivened by details in added red and white. Another cup decorated in this manner by the same painter was found at Thebes:  see: Thebes Museum 23414; Beazley, ABV 621.103; BAPD 306315.

Condition: Reassembled from fragments, with discolored repainting of fill, some lacunae, some chipping and wear.
