The tapered form features a tall broad shaft with a ribbed capital surmounted by four short horizontal bars, and pierced at the back for attachment.

The djed-pillar was closely linked with Osiris, and its shape was interpreted as a representation of his backbone, suggesting stability and endurance. Conferring these qualities on the deceased, it was placed within the mummy wrappings.
