The scarab, as a hieroglyph (hpr) means to “come into being” and as a symbol, represents the regeneration of the sun god every morning, the ultimate symbol of new life and hope. The scarab beetle protects the hearts of the deceased, shielding their very soul in the halls of justice. This pretty pendant of 14K gold, has been set with an ancient bright blue-glazed scaraboid.  Although similar in shape to scarab amulets, it lacks the details of the beetle’s anatomy. With an uninscribed base, it serves as a portable means of well-being and protection.

Medium: faience, 14K gold

Dimensions:  Scaraboid length: 6 mm (0.23 inch). The pendant is strung on an adjustable 18-inch 18K yellow gold chain.

Condition: The scarab is intact and in excellent condition overall, it has been set as a pendant in a modern 14K gold pendant.

Provenance: Private collection of Geoffrey Metz, Egyptologist, Sweden, acquired from the English trade in the 1990s.
