An exceptionally large ceremonial platter hand-carved from dense grey basalt. Circular in form with a shallow concave interior and finely tapered edges, the piece demonstrates the technical mastery of Chavín stoneworkers who shaped and polished extremely hard volcanic rock using simple abrasives.

Its monumental size and restrained design suggest a ritual rather than domestic function, possibly for offerings, libations, or the preparation of sacred materials in temple contexts associated with Chavín de Huántar. The platter’s smooth surfaces and weight convey both permanence and reverence, qualities central to Chavín ceremonial aesthetics.

Condition: Very good condition overall with a small chip to the rim and minor edge and surface wear consistent with age and use. An impressive piece that presents very well. 

Provenance: Private Maryland Collection, acquired in the 1950s and then by descent.

We send overseas shipments with FedEx International Priority which usually means two to three day delivery to Europe and the UK, customs willing but contact us if you have a shipping preference.
