Symbolizing fierceness and bravery, this flat backed lion head amulet with it's high raised relief frontal head presumably was expected to endow its wearer with the same qualities, together with protective qualities. In addition, lions, like all desert dwellers, were believed to have regenerative capabilities.

Condition: Small losses to the glaze and a loss to the lower left edge, but overall intact and in very good condition.

Dimensions: Height: 1 1/8 inches (2.7 cm)

Provenance: Private Maryland collection of a diplomat, acquired while serving in Egypt between 1949 and 1956, and then by descent.
