This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $75 if shipping internationally.
A rare double-sided faience plaque in the form of a cartouche, glazed in green-brown tones with traces of surface patina. One side bears the prenomen (throne name) of Pharaoh Amenhotep II, ˁꜥ-ḫprw-Rˁ (Aa-kheperu-Re, “Great are the manifestations of Re”), while the reverse carries his nomen (birth name), Jmn-ḥtp (Amenhotep, “Amun is satisfied”). The combination of both cartouches on a single amulet is an unusual feature that emphasizes its royal and devotional character.
Background: The cartouche form was reserved exclusively for the names of pharaohs, conferring divine protection and eternal legitimacy. Amenhotep II (reigned ca. 1450–1425 BC), the son of Thutmose III, was celebrated both for his athletic prowess and his military campaigns. His titulary is well attested in monumental inscriptions, scarabs, and faience objects. Amulets bearing his names circulated widely, not only within Egypt but also abroad, with examples found at Mycenae and Tiryns, underscoring their diplomatic as well as devotional functions. The presence of both cartouches on this plaque marks it as a particularly potent emblem of royal identity and divine protection.
