This object qualifies for free USA shipping and a flat rate fee of $75 if shipping internationally.
A finely worked oval appliqué of thin sheet gold, embossed with the figure of a standing male warrior facing left, one hand resting on his hip, his legs apart, standing above a triangular patterned groundline. The figure is rendered in low relief, with details of the body and costume formed by repoussé work. Four small perforations, one near each corner, indicate that the plaque was originally attached to a textile or leather backing, probably as a decorative ornament for a garment, belt, or ceremonial accessory.
Gold appliqués were widely used throughout the ancient Greek world to embellish clothing, headdresses, and other personal adornments. Particularly associated with elaborate dress and funerary furnishings, these lightweight ornaments were often produced from thin sheets of gold, allowing richly decorated surfaces to be created with relatively little metal. The depiction of a warrior reflects the importance of martial imagery in Greek art, where such figures were associated with strength, courage, and heroic ideals.
