

A Byzantine Gold and Garnet Pendant, Eastern Mediterranean, ca. 6th–7th century CE

A finely crafted Byzantine gold pendant of circular box construction, the front decorated with openwork filigree of coiled and beaded wire centered by a domed cabochon garnet. Small suspension loops project from the cardinal points, lending a balanced architectural symmetry typical of Byzantine jewelry design. The back is plain and closed, emphasizing the intricate filigree and rich color contrast of gold and garnet on the front. Such pendants were often worn as amulets, the garnet symbolizing divine light and spiritual protection.

Condition: Intact and in excellent condition. The pendant is strung on a modern, adjustable 18-inch, 18K yellow gold chain.
