A well-preserved iron axe head from the Kievan Rus cultural sphere, dating to the early medieval period (ca. 9th–11th century CE). This finely forged weapon features a long single-edged blade, elegantly curved and decorated on both faces with a series of punched dot patterns, likely indicating its use as a prestige or ceremonial item rather than for combat alone.

Opposite the blade, a curved rear fluke terminates in a rounded, bulbous tip, balancing the silhouette and adding visual sophistication. A robust central socket shaft runs vertically through the form, allowing for secure hafting. The decorative punchwork and balanced proportions reflect the martial aesthetics and symbolic traditions of the Rus warrior elite, where Norse, Slavic, and steppe influences converged.

Medium: Iron

Dimensions: Height: 4 1/4 inches (10.7 cm), Length: 6 3/4 inches (17.14 cm)

Condition: Intact and in excellent condition. Surface wear and minor pitting consistent with age. Patina is stable and uniform, with decoration clearly visible.  A very fine example.

Provenance: Emily & Walter Mead Collection, Santa Fe, New Mexico, acquired mid 20th century. Prominent collectors from the Mead Paper Corporation family, specializing in early weaponry and antiquities.
